West Chester - Philadelphia Baseball Review
For most teams, the Division II National Finals are a time to settle nerves.

West Chester looked like a team that had been there before.

The Golden Rams erupted for five runs in the first inning Friday night and never looked back, rolling to a 12-3 victory over Indianapolis to open play at the NCAA Division II National Finals in Cary, North Carolina.

The win improved West Chester to 45-10 overall and continued a season-long trend that has defined the Golden Rams. When they score first, they usually win. When they score early, opponents are often left chasing the game.

Friday was no different.

After working around traffic on the bases in the top of the first, West Chester turned immediately to its offense. Caleb Strawhecker opened the scoring with an RBI double before RBI singles from Austin Stalker, Tanner Donati and Christian Michak helped fuel a five-run outburst that put Indianapolis on its heels from the outset.

The Golden Rams never allowed the Greyhounds to recover.

While the offense supplied the fireworks, starter Julian Costa delivered the stability.

Indianapolis threatened repeatedly during the early innings, collecting baserunners and putting pressure on the defense. But Costa and the Golden Rams consistently found answers. Twice in the opening inning, Indianapolis runners were erased on pickoff plays. Another baserunner was thrown out attempting to steal in the third.

Those defensive plays helped Costa navigate seven innings, allowing two runs while striking out seven.

His biggest escape came in the second inning. After Indianapolis loaded the bases, pitching coach John Fleming visited the mound. Costa responded by recording a key strikeout before inducing a ground ball to end the threat and preserve a four-run lead.

West Chester gradually expanded its advantage from there.

Strawhecker delivered again in the fifth inning with an RBI single to push the lead to 6-2. In the sixth, Hunter Smith crossed the plate during a rundown play to make it 7-2. Two innings later, Carter Rust delivered the knockout blow, launching a three-run home run that stretched the margin to 12-2 and removed any remaining suspense.

The offense produced 14 hits and featured contributions throughout the lineup. Eight of West Chester's nine starters recorded at least one hit, led by Strawhecker's three-hit, two-RBI performance.

Smith added two RBIs, while Rust's eighth-inning blast capped the most complete offensive performance of the Golden Rams' NCAA Tournament run.

The victory continued a remarkable postseason surge for West Chester, which improved to 6-0 in the 2026 NCAA Tournament and opened the National Finals with a victory for the first time since 2017.

Just as importantly, it moved the Golden Rams one step closer to the ultimate goal.

West Chester will return to action Sunday evening against UT Tyler in a winners-bracket matchup after the Patriots defeated Central Missouri earlier in the day.
