Eastern baseball - Philadelphia Baseball Review
PHILADELPHIA -- Eastern did what it needed to do.

It just didn’t get what it needed elsewhere.

The Eagles closed their regular season Sunday with a 5–4 come-from-behind win over Widener in the second game of a doubleheader, keeping their postseason hopes alive — briefly. Minutes later, those hopes ended as Hood rallied in the bottom of the ninth in its own game, securing the final spot in the MAC Commonwealth tournament and leaving Eastern on the outside.

The result capped a tightly packed finish in the standings.

Eastern, Hood and York all finished tied in conference play, but tiebreakers worked against the Eagles, who were eliminated despite winning on the final day of the regular season.

It was a difficult finish for a team that had already made history.

Eastern ends the year 26–14 overall and 10–11 in conference play, setting a program record for wins and finishing with the second-highest total in the MAC Commonwealth, trailing only Messiah’s 28.

The final day reflected the balance of the season — progress, pressure and a narrow margin.

After dropping the opener 6–1, Eastern entered Game 2 needing a win and help. Widener, already locked into the No. 2 seed, took early control, scoring twice in the first inning and extending the lead to 4–1 through five.

Eastern responded methodically.

A run in the fifth inning cut into the deficit, and another in the sixth brought the Eagles within one. In the seventh, Eastern broke through. A series of quality at-bats produced two runs, turning a one-run deficit into a 5–4 lead — the team’s first of the game.

The bullpen made it stand.

Senior Gage Curnane, who had taken on a larger role late in the season, closed out the final inning to secure the win. By the time the final out was recorded, attention had already shifted to the scoreboard, where Eastern’s postseason fate would be decided.

When Hood completed its rally, that path closed.

Eastern’s season ends short of the tournament, but not short of significance.

The Eagles’ 26 wins represent the highest total in program history and a marked improvement from a 10-win season in 2023. The senior class, recognized prior to Sunday's game, played a central role in that shift, helping elevate the program’s consistency and competitiveness within the conference.

Widener, meanwhile, split the doubleheader and finished the regular season 20–18 overall and 13–8 in conference play. The Pride secured the No. 2 seed and will host Hood in the MAC Commonwealth semifinals.

For Eastern, the ending was decided elsewhere.

The progress was not.
