Kyle Schwarber - Phillies - Philadelphia Baseball Review
The names attached to this particular piece of Phillies history tell you almost everything you need to know.

Kyle Schwarber joined them Tuesday night.

With another home run in the first inning at Fenway Park Schwarber tied the Phillies franchise record by homering in a fifth consecutive game, placing himself alongside some of the most powerful and impactful hitters the organization has ever produced.

For more than half a century, only a handful of Phillies had managed to sustain this kind of power surge. Dick Allen did it in 1969. Mike Schmidt did it during his MVP season in 1979. Bobby Abreu reached the mark in 2005. Chase Utley accomplished it twice during the Phillies’ 2008 championship season. More recently, Rhys Hoskins, Odubel Herrera and Trea Turner each authored their own five-game streaks.

Now Schwarber has added his name to that lineage.

And the timing of it matters.

The Phillies have spent much of the opening portion of the season searching for consistency offensively, but Schwarber’s bat has become one of the clearest signs that the club may finally be stabilizing. Entering Tuesday night, Schwarber was already hitting .368 (7-for-19) over his previous four games with five home runs and seven RBIs during one of the hottest stretches of his Phillies career.

Tuesday only deepened it.

The home run streak also creates an unusual historical connection inside the Phillies dugout. The Major League record for consecutive games with a home run is eight, shared by only three players in baseball history: Dale Long, Ken Griffey Jr. and Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly.

So while Schwarber was tying a Phillies franchise record Tuesday night, one of the few men in baseball history to sustain an even longer streak was watching from only a few steps away.

That is the kind of baseball symmetry the sport rarely fails to deliver.
