Philadelphia Championship Series | Pre 1900 Baseball in Philly

The Philadelphia Championship Series was the unofficial name given by the Philadelphia Inquirer to the yearly series of contests between professional baseball clubs in Philadelphia. This page houses recaps to every contest dating back to the first on April 21, 1873. 

1873 
April 21, 1873 | Jefferson Street Grounds 
Philadelphia White Stockings 11, Philadelphia Athletic 3 
Four thousand fans watched the first intra-city game played in Philadelphia between two professional clubs. Hurler George Zettlein pushed across the first run with a fly-ball to left field in the fifth inning that John McMullin dropped; Jim Devlin scored on the play to give the Whites a 1-0 advantage. The Whites scored four more runs in the frame and cruised to victory. 

May 14, 1873 | Jefferson Street Grounds 
Philadelphia White Stockings 5, Philadelphia Athletic 4 (13 Inn.) 
Charles Fulmer reached to open the 13th via an error by Athletic third baseman Ezra Sutton and advanced to third following a single by George Zettlein and a passed ball. Ned Cuthbert then delivered the winning hit with a single up the middle to score Fulmer. 

June 11, 1873 | Jefferson Street Grounds 
Philadelphia White Stockings 7, Philadelphia Athletic 5 
The Whites pieced together a five-run seventh inning highlighted by a Denny Mack double that scored Fred Treacey to give the Whites a one-run advantage. Ned Cuthbert followed with a single to score Mack and push the Whites ahead by two. George Zettlein secured the win, while Dick McBride took the loss. 

June 21, 1873 | Jefferson Street Grounds 
Philadelphia White Stockings 17, Philadelphia Athletic 5 
Jimmy Wood scored four times, and George Zettlein again impressed on the mound as the Whites secured a fourth consecutive win over the Athletic. A five-run sixth put the game on ice for the White Stockings. 

June 30, 1873 | Jefferson Street Grounds 
Philadelphia White Stockings 27, Philadelphia Athletic 17 
Poor field conditions from a morning rain made for a terrible day of fielding; only ten of the 44 runs scored were earned, and the game lasted for over three hours. The White Stockings jumped to a 10-0 lead in the second. Jimmy Wood, Levi Meyerle, and Fred Treacey scored four runs each in the win.

September 8, 1873 | Jefferson Street Grounds 
Philadelphia White Stockings 6, Philadelphia Athletic 5 
Cap Anson dropped a flyball in the opening frame, allowing the White Stockings to extend the inning while scoring four runs. Levi Meyerle delivered the game-winning hit in the seventh with a two-out single to leftfield, allowing Ned Cuthbert to score after he reached with a single earlier in the inning.

September 22, 1873 | Jefferson Street Grounds 
Philadelphia White Stockings 14, Philadelphia Athletic 7 
Poor defense again hindered Athletic as the Whites scored 11 runs over the final four frames to secure the seventh consecutive victory in the intra-city series. Denny Mack and Levi Meyerle scored three runs each for the Whites. 

September 29, 1873 | Jefferson Street Grounds 
Philadelphia Athletic 7, Philadelphia White Stockings 6 
Cherokee Fisher started for Athletic and led his club to its first intra-city series win of the year. John McMullin paced the Athletic offense with a pair of runs scored. 

October 11, 1873 | Jefferson Street Grounds 
Philadelphia White Stockings 13, Philadelphia Athletic 9 
The Whites took advantage of some lousy defense by the Athletic in the ninth inning and scored six runs in the final frame to secure a win in the last intra-city game of the season. Ned Cuthbert scored three runs for the Whites.
 
1874
April 16, 1874 | Jefferson Street Grounds 
Philadelphia Athletic 14, Philadelphia White Stockings 5
The Whites jumped ahead with an early 3-0 lead, but the Athletic scored ten runs over the span of three innings to move ahead without ever looking back. A Candy Cummings error on a pop-fly with two outs sparked the rally for the Athletic. Dick McBride recorded the victory, surrendering just five hits. 

May 7, 1874 | Jefferson Street Grounds 
Philadelphia Athletic 7, Philadelphia White Stockings 1
Dick McBride was outstanding again, surrendering just one hit in the win. Wes Fisler and John Clapp scored two runs each for Athletic.
