Immaculata baseball - Philadelphia Baseball Review
The postseason margin for error has all but disappeared for the Immaculata baseball team.

Facing Marymount in the opening round of the Atlantic East Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon, the Mighty Macs struggled to match the Saints offensively and dropped a 5-2 decision in a weather-shifted contest played at Centenary University.

Because the Atlantic East Tournament operates under a double-elimination format, Immaculata now enters Friday needing a victory to keep its season alive.

The Mighty Macs threatened late, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.

For much of the afternoon, Alex LePage kept Immaculata within striking distance despite limited offensive support. The right-hander delivered another gritty outing, working all eight innings while allowing five runs — only three earned — and striking out three across 107 pitches.

But Marymount consistently created pressure in key moments.

After both teams stranded runners in the first inning, the Saints broke through in the third on a chaotic sequence that saw Quincy Via score during a caught-stealing rundown play to give Marymount a 1-0 lead.

A sacrifice fly in the fourth doubled the advantage before the Saints created separation in the fifth and sixth innings behind consecutive RBI doubles from Francis Swekosky and Evan Schick. Another sacrifice fly in the sixth extended the lead to 5-0.

Immaculata finally broke through in the eighth inning and briefly made things interesting.

With the bases loaded, Hunter Weitzel lined an RBI single through the left side to score Josh Goulburn and put the Mighty Macs on the board. JT Luther followed with a sacrifice fly that plated Matt Passerini and suddenly brought the tying run to the plate.

But the rally ended abruptly when Marymount cut down a runner attempting to steal third base.

That sequence ultimately became the turning point of Immaculata’s comeback bid.

The Mighty Macs placed two more runners aboard in the ninth inning, but a game-ending groundout sealed the victory for the Saints.

Passerini paced Immaculata offensively with a three-hit performance, while Goulburn and Passerini accounted for the club’s two runs scored. Weitzel and Luther each drove in a run in the losing effort.

Now the focus turns to survival.

Immaculata, which sits at 15-23 overall and 10-8 in conference play, will face Centenary on Friday morning in an elimination game with its season on the line.
