Phillies - Kyle Schwarber - Philadelphia Baseball Review
PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies are starting to resemble something dangerous again.

Not because they suddenly look unbeatable.

Because they finally look stable.

On Sunday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies completed another methodical victory, blanking the Colorado Rockies, 6-0, to secure a fourth consecutive series win and improve to 10-3 under interim manager Don Mattingly.

The offense struck early.

Kyle Schwarber made sure of that.

Again.

Schwarber continued what is rapidly becoming one of the most explosive stretches of his Phillies career, launching two more home runs Sunday to give him five homers in his last four games and 16 on the season — tying Aaron Judge for the Major League lead.

And yes, the math is starting to become impossible to ignore.

A year ago, Schwarber spent much of the summer flirting with Ryan Howard’s franchise single-season record of 58 home runs before ultimately finishing with a career-best 56. Through the Phillies’ first 41 games this season, Schwarber’s current pace projects beyond that mark, putting him on track for more than 60 home runs if he maintains anything close to this level.

It sounds absurd.

Then again, so does the way he’s swinging right now.

Schwarber wasted almost no time extending his home run streak to four consecutive games Sunday afternoon, ambushing an early fastball from Rockies starter Tomoyuki Sugano and sending it an estimated 432 feet into the seats beyond center field.

A few innings later, he did it again.

The second blast gave the Phillies a 5-0 lead and removed almost all tension from the afternoon before the middle innings even arrived.

The homer streak now matches the longest streak of Schwarber’s career and represents the longest by a Phillies hitter since Trea Turner homered in five straight games during the 2023 season.

The frightening part for opposing pitchers?

Schwarber still doesn’t think he’s fully locked in yet.

After the game, Schwarber acknowledged the recent results have obviously been encouraging, but also suggested there are still parts of his swing and approach he believes can improve.

Which feels slightly terrifying considering the current production.

The Phillies backed Schwarber’s power surge with the kind of complete performance they have been searching for much of the season.

Bryce Harper joined Schwarber in the first-inning fireworks with a homer of his own as the Phillies went back-to-back early. Bryson Stott later scored on a Rockies throwing error, while Alec Bohm added an RBI and eventually came around on a sacrifice fly from Turner.

More importantly, the Phillies finally received length from Cristopher Sánchez at a time when they desperately needed it.

The left-hander delivered seven scoreless innings with seven strikeouts, extending his personal scoreless streak to 20 2/3 innings while helping stabilize a bullpen that had absorbed a massive workload over the previous three games.

But Sánchez’s afternoon was defined less by dominance than by poise.

In the third inning, the Rockies threatened immediately with consecutive singles from Ezequiel Tovar and Jake McCarthy. Sánchez responded by retiring the next three hitters, including strikeouts of Tyler Freeman and Hunter Goodman.

Then came his biggest moment in the seventh.

With his pitch count already beyond 100 and two runners aboard, McCarthy drove a ball into the right-center field gap that briefly looked capable of ending both the shutout and Sánchez’s afternoon. Instead, Adolis García tracked it down before the ball could find grass, preserving Sánchez’s scoreless line and allowing the Phillies to cruise the rest of the way.

Jonathan Bowlan handled the eighth inning before Jhoan Duran closed out the ninth.

And suddenly, a Phillies season that spent weeks drifting sideways is beginning to show signs of momentum.

Not just because they’re winning.

Because they finally look like they remember who they are.
