Cole Fehrman controlled the game from the first pitch.
The Saint Joseph’s right-hander delivered one of the most dominant outings in the Atlantic 10 this season, striking out 13 over eight shutout innings as the Hawks defeated St. Bonaventure, 3-0, on Saturday at Smithson Field.
In a tightly played game defined by pitching, Fehrman and St. Bonaventure starter Tristan Ciampa matched zeros through five innings before Saint Joseph’s finally broke through in the sixth.
Alex Kelsey opened the inning with an infield single, and Blake Primrose followed by driving a ball off the left-field fence for an RBI double, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Joey Pagano added a sacrifice fly to extend the advantage.
Saint Joseph’s (31-15, 21-2 Atlantic 10) created more separation in the seventh. Tim Dickinson led off with a single, and after Carson Applegate reached on an infield hit and Kelsey drew a walk, Primrose was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in another run.
That was more than enough for Fehrman.
The right-hander allowed just two hits and did not issue a walk, retiring the first nine batters he faced and never allowing a runner to advance past first base. He exited after eight innings with 13 strikeouts — the highest single-game total by an Atlantic 10 pitcher this season.
Sam Greer handled the ninth, retiring the side in order to complete the shutout and earn his second save.
Primrose led the offense with two hits and two RBIs, while Kelsey reached base three times as the Hawks continued their strong conference play.
The series is scheduled to conclude Sunday.
