Ursinus baseball - Philadelphia Baseball Review
PHILADELPHIA -- Ursinus did just enough to extend its season.

The Bears split a doubleheader Sunday against No. 9 Johns Hopkins — falling 6–5 in the opener before responding with an 8–3 win in Game 2 — to clinch a berth in the Centennial Conference postseason tournament as the No. 4 seed.

The result capped a tightly contested race in the middle of the standings.

Ursinus, Gettysburg and Swarthmore each finished 9–9 in conference play, but only two advanced. Gettysburg secured the fifth seed, while Swarthmore missed the tournament after losing the tiebreaker based on its 1–3 combined record against Ursinus and Gettysburg.

For Ursinus, the split was enough.

The Bears appeared on track to secure their postseason spot early in Game 1, carrying a 5–3 lead into the seventh inning. But Johns Hopkins scored three runs in the frame to take a 6–5 lead, and Ursinus was unable to recover, sending the decision to the second game of the doubleheader.

Needing a win to keep its postseason hopes intact, Ursinus responded in Game 2.

The Bears took an early lead with two runs in the first inning, but Johns Hopkins answered with three runs of its own to move in front. Ursinus regained control in the fifth inning, when first-year Brett Barrett delivered a three-run home run to left-center field, giving the Bears a 5–3 advantage.

Barrett’s home run not only shifted the game but also set a new single-season program record, pushing his RBI total to 46.

From there, Ursinus added three insurance runs and turned the game over to senior Max Shilstone, who delivered a complete-game effort. After allowing three runs in the first inning, Shilstone settled in and limited Johns Hopkins to just two hits over the final eight innings, securing the victory and the postseason berth.

Ursinus finished the regular season 22–16–1 overall and 9–9 in conference play, marking the program’s first appearance in the Centennial tournament since 2017.

The Bears will now host Gettysburg on Tuesday in a play-in game, with the winner advancing to the double-elimination portion of the conference tournament and the loser eliminated.
