Penn baseball - Philadelphia Baseball Review
PHILADELPHIA — Penn took care of its business Saturday.

Now, the Quakers will wait to see if it was enough.

Behind a pair of balanced offensive performances and steady pitching, the University of Pennsylvania swept Brown, 11-3 and 7-3, at Meiklejohn Stadium, finishing the regular season with a 14-7 Ivy League record — the best mark in the conference.

Whether it results in a regular season championship will be decided next weekend.

Penn can still claim the Ivy League regular-season title if Yale fails to sweep Dartmouth in New Haven. For now, the Quakers have done everything within their control, closing their schedule at 20-20 overall and positioning themselves atop the standings.

In the opener, Penn methodically built separation.

After a scoreless first two innings, the Quakers broke through in the third with a pair of runs, then added four more in the fourth to seize control. Nick Spaventa and Ernie Echevarria led the offense with three hits apiece, combining for four RBIs, while Jay Secretarski and Jarrett Pokrovsky helped fuel the early surge.

Penn continued to apply pressure late. Echevarria delivered an RBI double in the seventh, and Nick Guachione followed with his first career home run to extend the lead. Gavin Degnan added a solo shot in the eighth as the Quakers pulled away.

On the mound, Jake Moss provided stability, striking out five and working through traffic to secure his fourth win of the season.

The second game followed a similar script — early control, a mid-game challenge, and a decisive response.

Pokrovsky gave Penn a quick 2-0 lead with a home run in the second inning, and Echevarria extended the advantage with a solo shot in the fifth. But Brown answered in the sixth, stringing together hits and a two-run homer to tie the game at 3-3.

Penn’s response was immediate.

The Quakers broke the tie in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four runs to regain control. Ryan Taylor crossed with the go-ahead run, and Degnan added a two-run double to create separation.

From there, Penn closed it out behind its bullpen, with John Cerwinski finishing the sweep.

The result capped a day in which Penn showed both its offensive depth and its ability to respond to pressure — traits that have defined its conference season.

Now, the focus shifts north.

If Yale stumbles, Penn will be regular season champions and host the Ivy League tournament later this month.

Either way, they made their case.
