Player of the Week in Philly - Philadelphia Baseball Review

PHILADELPHIA -- At this point in the season, individual performances aren’t just about numbers.

They’re about timing.

And this week, both Penn and Saint Joseph’s got exactly what they needed from two of their most important pieces — performances recognized as part of the Philadelphia Baseball Review Weekly Awards, presented by Wheelhouse Cards, the official baseball card sponsor of the Philadelphia Baseball Review.

Penn senior right-hander Thomas Shurtleff delivered the kind of outing that stabilizes a weekend — and a rotation. Facing Princeton on April 18, Shurtleff turned in his most complete performance of the season, working seven scoreless innings in a 12-0 win.

It wasn’t just effective.

It was dominant.

Seven innings. Four hits. No runs. No walks. Ten strikeouts.

That line doesn’t just stand out — it controls a game from the first inning on. And it came at a moment when Penn needed it most in a series with direct postseason implications.

There’s been a clear progression to Shurtleff’s season. Over his last two starts, he’s allowed zero earned runs across 13 innings, including a shutout effort against Cornell prior to Princeton. The command has sharpened. The swing-and-miss has increased. And the results are starting to match the profile.

For the season, Shurtleff owns a 3.12 ERA across 52 innings, emerging as a reliable presence at the front of the rotation as Penn pushes toward the Ivy League tournament.

At Saint Joseph’s, the impact came from the lineup.

And it came in waves.

Junior outfielder Joey Gale — an Archbishop Wood graduate — put together a stretch that defined the Hawks’ offensive surge, earning Offensive Player of the Week honors. Over the April 17–18 series against George Mason, Gale was relentless at the top of the order.

He went a combined 8-for-13 across the doubleheader sweep on April 18 alone, scoring six runs and driving in four. That included a three-hit performance in each game, consistently setting the table and extending innings for a lineup that overwhelmed pitching all weekend.

It wasn’t just volume.

It was pressure.

Gale’s ability to get on base early has been a defining piece of Saint Joseph’s identity. Through conference play, the Hawks have consistently scored in the first inning — and players like Gale are the reason why. He doesn’t just contribute to rallies.

He starts them.

For the season, Gale is hitting .324 with 34 hits and 29 runs scored, providing a steady presence in a lineup built on depth and momentum.

And like Shurtleff, his performance came at the right time.

Because as the season tightens, the difference isn’t just talent.

It’s who delivers when it matters.

This week, both Penn and Saint Joseph’s got that answer.
