La Salle hung with one of the nation’s top programs Saturday, but a few costly mistakes proved the difference in a 6–4 loss to No. 10 Clemson at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

The Explorers (8–4) matched the Tigers in hits (7–8) and twice cut into the deficit late, but three defensive errors and eight walks issued by the pitching staff helped Clemson (13–1) hold on.

Clemson scored first in the opening inning and extended the lead to 3–0 in the third, aided by a La Salle error before Luke Gaffney delivered an RBI double. The Tigers added another run in the fifth to make it 4–0.

La Salle responded in the sixth. AJ Guiliana eventually scored on a Clemson throwing error, and Rueben Livingston followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Chase Swain and cut the deficit to 4–2.

Clemson answered immediately with Jay Dillard’s RBI double in the bottom of the sixth, but the Explorers rallied again in the eighth. Livingston reached on a fielding error that allowed Daniel Perez to score, and Alec Welshans followed with an RBI single to pull La Salle within 5–4.

The Tigers added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning on Dillard’s sacrifice fly before closer Danny Nelson struck out four over the final two innings to secure the win.

Guiliana scored twice for La Salle, while Livingston and Welshans drove in the Explorers’ runs.

Starter Jace Terry (0–1) allowed four runs over five innings for La Salle. Clemson’s Michael Sharman (4–0) earned the win, striking out eight across five innings.

Elsewhere, Villanova built an early four-run lead Saturday afternoon but couldn’t hold it, falling 6–5 to Florida A&M in the second game of a three-game series at Moore-Kittles Field.

The Wildcats jumped in front quickly. After Florida A&M scored in the first, JoJo Montgomery answered in the second with a two-run single up the middle that scored Mark Gialluisi and Collin Quintano to give Villanova a 2–1 lead.

Villanova extended the advantage in the third when Mark Gialluisi delivered a two-run single to left, scoring Carter Richey and Michael Whooley. The Wildcats added another run in the fourth on Richey’s RBI double to right-center, pushing the lead to 5–1.

Florida A&M began its comeback in the fifth when Jay Campbell launched a two-run homer. Colton Ryals followed later in the inning with an RBI single to cut the Villanova lead to 5–4.

The Rattlers completed the rally in the sixth. Alex Monile singled to tie the game before Campbell delivered again with an RBI single that put Florida A&M ahead 6–5.

Villanova was unable to respond late and went down in order in the ninth as Florida A&M secured the series.

Gialluisi and Montgomery each drove in two runs for the Wildcats, who will look to salvage the finale of the series Sunday in Tallahassee.

In other action, Saint Joseph’s mounted a furious late comeback Saturday afternoon but came up just short in a 15–13 loss to Bucknell.

The Hawks (4–8) fell behind early after the Bison scored three runs in the first and then broke the game open with a seven-run third inning. Bucknell later added three more in the sixth to extend the lead to 13–4.

Saint Joseph’s refused to go quietly.

The Hawks began the rally in the sixth when Richard Beggy ripped a two-run double to score Blake Primrose and Joey Pagano. SJU added four more runs in the seventh, highlighted by Primrose’s two-run double and Beggy’s RBI single, cutting the deficit to 13–8.

The comeback nearly materialized in the eighth. Beggy delivered another RBI single before Alex Venezia launched a three-run home run that pulled the Hawks within 14–13.

Bucknell added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning, and Saint Joseph’s was unable to complete the rally despite bringing the tying run to the plate in the ninth.

The Hawks piled up a season-high 17 hits in the loss. Beggy led the way, going 4-for-4 with a walk and five RBIs, while Primrose, Venezia and Alex Kelsey each collected three hits.

Saint Joseph’s will attempt to bounce back Sunday when the teams meet in the series finale.
