Gwynedd Mercy baseball - Philadelphia Baseball Review
Gwynedd Mercy remained unbeaten Friday afternoon.

Behind a dominant outing from sophomore right-hander Connor Hafto and a three-hit performance from senior Jimmy DeCarlo, the Griffins improved to 3-0 with a 7-1 victory over Penn State Hazleton at Frank O. Genuardi Legends Baseball Field in the opening game of their round-robin tournament.

Hafto (2-0) was in control from the outset, working 5.1 innings while allowing just one earned run on four hits and one walk. He struck out five on 87 pitches before turning the ball over to senior left-hander Ryan Kasper, who tossed 3.2 scoreless innings to earn his first save of the season.

Gwynedd Mercy struck first in the bottom of the opening frame. Noah Waldron reached and later scored when DeCarlo ripped a single to right field to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.

The Griffins added two more in the third. An error in right field allowed both DeCarlo and freshman Charlie Neal to score, stretching the advantage to 3-0.

DeCarlo stayed hot in the fifth, driving a double to left for his second RBI of the afternoon and a 4-0 cushion. The senior finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.

Penn State Hazleton scratched across a run in the sixth, but Gwynedd Mercy answered late. Drew Haines delivered an RBI in the seventh to make it 5-1, and sophomore Brady Belfus capped the scoring in the eighth with a two-run double.

Belfus went 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Haines added two hits and an RBI. Waldron scored twice and reached base three times, and Neal drew three walks.

The Griffins collected 10 hits and eight walks.

Gwynedd Mercy continues tournament play Saturday when it hosts Penn State Abington at noon.
