Chestnut Hill erased an early deficit and produced a decisive middle-inning rally in an 11-5 victory over Staten Island.
After Staten Island scored twice in the opening frame, the Griffins (2-2) responded with a three-run third. Angus Moore’s RBI single got Chestnut Hill on the board, Kenyon Motley followed with an RBI triple, and Aiden Myers capped the rally with an RBI single to give the Griffins a 3-2 lead.
The hosts tied the game at three in the fourth, but Chestnut Hill reclaimed the advantage when Jackson Shollenberger belted a solo homer.
The go-ahead surge came in the sixth. Moore’s second RBI hit started the rally, Motley and Michael Pascoe followed with run-scoring hits, and the Griffins capitalized on aggressive baserunning and timely contact to extend their lead to 8-3.
Chestnut Hill tacked on two more in the seventh on an error-aided run and a sacrifice fly by Motley to stretch the margin to 10-4. Bobby Sabatino and Dylan Broderick each scored, and the offense finished with eight hits and eight walks in the balanced attack.
Motley led the way at the plate with three hits and three RBIs, while Moore added two hits and two runs driven in. Conway earned the win in relief, and the Griffin bullpen held Staten Island in check the rest of the way.
West Chester Splits DH With Wilmington
West Chester’s day started with a narrow defeat before the Golden Rams unleashed a big offensive performance in game two.
Game One — Wilmington 5, West Chester 4
Wilmington built a 5-0 lead by the fourth inning and held that advantage until a late West Chester rally. Carter Rust doubled home the first run before Drew Simpson blasted a three-run homer in the sixth to pull the Golden Rams within one. Wildcat pitching, however, shut down further offense as West Chester fell just short. Chase Fleming earned the win, striking out seven, while Kyle Rogers took the loss. Trey Stricker pitched two scoreless relief innings in his team debut.
Game Two — West Chester 13, Wilmington 2
West Chester came back with authority in the nightcap. After Wilmington briefly took a 1-0 lead, Harry Middlebrooks tied it with an RBI groundout in the third. The Golden Ram offense exploded in the fourth and fifth innings as Patrick Gozdan drove in three runs and Rust and Hunter Smith added RBIs to power an 8-1 advantage. West Chester continued to tack on runs in the sixth, taking advantage of defensive miscues and timely hits, before Nick Parrotto shut down Wilmington in the seventh. Kyle Lazer earned the win in relief with three strikeouts, and starter Luke Raho scattered four hits in his outing.
West Chester returns to Cary Sunday to conclude the weekend against Dominican, set to begin at 9 a.m.
