Philly College Baseball - Philadelphia Baseball Review
PHILADELPHIA -- February does not offer certainty. It offers exposure.

Road trips reveal rotations. Early series reveal bats. And over the week of Feb. 16–22, two performances separated themselves from the rest of the Philadelphia Division I field.

Penn’s Marty Coyne did not simply make a start in College Station. He announced a role.

An All-Ivy League selection last season as a reliever, Coyne is now transitioning into Penn’s starting rotation. Against nationally ranked Texas A&M, he delivered a performance that carried weight beyond the box score: five scoreless innings, nine strikeouts, four hits, one walk.

The opponent matters. Texas A&M entered the weekend as one of the more productive offenses in the country through the season’s first two weeks. In a hostile SEC environment, Coyne dictated tempo, attacked the zone, and neutralized power. There were no extended innings. No unraveling. Just controlled execution against elite competition.

That is not routine February pitching. That is rotation presence.

If Coyne’s week was defined by command, La Salle’s Alec Welshans defined his through production.

Welshans supplied steady offensive pressure across the week, highlighted by a two-hit, two-RBI performance that included a home run at Delaware. He followed with additional run production in La Salle’s weekend series, extending innings and capitalizing on scoring opportunities rather than expanding early in counts.

In February, consistency is currency. Welshans provided it. He lengthened at-bats, delivered in leverage spots, and gave La Salle a stabilizing force in the middle of the order as the lineup continues to take shape.

The calendar may say early. The implications do not.

Coyne established himself as a starter capable of handling elite lineups. Welshans established himself as a bat capable of driving momentum across a series.

For the week of Feb. 16–22:

PBR Division I Pitcher of the Week: Marty Coyne, Penn
PBR Division I Player of the Week: Alec Welshans, La Salle.
