Phillies & Yankees series preview, pitching matchups

The Phillies have played poorly since the All-Star break and have gone 3-7 on their last 10 contests; the only other top-tier club that has played as poorly is the Yankees who enter Monday's series at Citizens Bank Park having won 11 of the club's last 30 games. 

It's a potential World Series rematch.

Where: Citizens Bank Park, Monday through Wednesday.

 

Pitching matchups and start times: RHP Zack Wheeler (10-4, 2.55) vs. RHP Luis Gil (10-5, 3.10) on Monday at 6:40 p.m., RHP Aaron Nola (11-4, 3.44) vs. RHP Gerrit Cole (3-2, 5.40) on Tuesday at 6:40 p.m., and LHP Cristopher Sanchez (7-6, 3.05) vs. LHP Nestor Cortes (4-9, 4.13) on Wednesday at 12:35 p.m..

Series: The two teams have not faced each other this season. Overall, the Yankees hold a 21-20 all-time series lead.

Yankees Update (62-45): As noted, the Yankees have been sliding for the past month and were swept last week by the Mets in a three-game set, however, the offense is showing signs of life having scored 26 runs over a three-game series with Boston this past weekend. The club acquired Jazz Chisholm Jr. from Miami on Saturday in exchange for three Minor League prospects. In 101 games for Miami this season, Chisholm (a 2022 National League All-Star) slashed .249/.323/.407 (101 OPS+) with 14 doubles, four triples, 13 homers, 50 RBIs and 22 stolen bases. Giancarlo Stanton is expected to return from the IL on Monday. 

 

Phillies Update (65-40): The Phillies squandered an early three-run lead and fell to the Cleveland Guardians, 4-3 on Sunday, marking their fourth consecutive series loss and dropping eight of their last twelve games. Despite their struggles, the Phillies remain unaffected in the NL East standings, as the Braves are also faltering. Nonetheless, this stretch is undoubtedly the Phillies' roughest of the season. Jose Alvarado is 1-5 with a 4.25 ERA on the season and has been charged with 12 runs in his last 15 innings. The homer he allowed on Sunday was the first he allowed to a left-handed hitter since Yordan Alvarez in Game 6 of the 2022 World Series.

Notable Injuries: Yankees -- C Jose Trevino (quad), 1B Anthony Rizzo (wrist), and RP Nick Burdi (hip) are on the injured list.  

 

Phillies -- RHP Spencer Turnbull (shoulder), RHP Taijuan Walker (finger), SP Ranger Suarez (back), and RHP Dylan Covey (shoulder) are on the injured list.
