The Phillies made a notable roster move on Friday, parting ways with veteran utility player Whit Merrifield and recalling infielder Weston Wilson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski announced the changes ahead of the weekend series against the Oakland Athletics at Citizens Bank Park.

Merrifield, 35, who signed a $7 million free-agent deal in February, struggled to find his footing in Philadelphia. In 53 games, he started 20 times in left field, 12 at second base, and eight at third base, but managed only a .199 average with 11 RBIs and 21 runs scored over 174 plate appearances. The Phillies will owe Merrifield $3 million of his salary.

Wilson, 29, is back for his second stint with the Phillies this season. He initially made his debut on June 9 at London Stadium against the Mets. Since being sent down, Wilson has been on a tear in Lehigh Valley, hitting .315 with 10 home runs and 20 RBIs in 20 games, earning International League Player of the Week honors on July 1. The Phillies signed Wilson as a free agent in January 2023, banking on his potential to provide depth and versatility.
