Phillies Wheeler
The Phillies will be without ace Zack Wheeler for his next scheduled start, as the right-hander continues to deal with back spasms that have plagued him over his last three outings. Wheeler exited early from his July 9 start against the Dodgers with left low back tightness, an issue that has persisted but was managed by the Phillies’ medical staff to keep him in the rotation until now.

An MRI on Wheeler’s back revealed no structural damage, which is a relief for the Phillies as they navigate the second half of the season. Despite the encouraging MRI results, the Phillies are erring on the side of caution, deciding to skip Wheeler's start on Sunday. The good news: Wheeler does not require any injections as part of his recovery.

The Phillies have yet to name a replacement for Wheeler’s Sunday start. Manager Rob Thomson indicated that the decision will hinge on bullpen usage during Friday and Saturday’s games. Thomson expects Wheeler to return to the rotation immediately following the All-Star break.

In other injury updates, Thomson said J.T. Realmuto is expected to head to Clearwater during the All-Star break to continue his rehab from right knee surgery. He could be activated soon thereafter.
