Saint Joseph's - Philadelphia Baseball Review
Saint Joseph’s did its damage early and trusted its pitching late.

The Hawks scored six runs over the first four innings behind a fast start from Richard Beggy and a steady outing from Duke McCarron, holding off a late push to defeat George Washington, 7–4, Friday afternoon at Smithson Field.

Beggy set the tone immediately. With two on in the first inning, the junior lined a triple to center field, driving in two runs. Moments later, he came home on a George Washington error as Saint Joseph’s built a quick 3–0 lead without recording an out.

The Hawks added to that cushion in the fourth. Alex Venezia delivered an RBI single before Ben Peterson followed with a two-run hit, stretching the advantage to 6–0.

That was more than enough for McCarron.

The right-hander worked 6 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out six to earn his second win of the season. He kept George Washington off balance for much of the afternoon, limiting hard contact and pitching out of trouble when needed.

George Washington (8–12) began to chip away in the fifth and mounted its biggest threat in the eighth, scoring twice to cut the deficit to 6–3.

Saint Joseph’s answered immediately.

Jason Janesko led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run to right field, providing a critical insurance run and restoring a four-run cushion.

The Colonials added a run in the ninth, but Christian Coppola closed the door, finishing off the Hawks’ 7–4 victory.

Saint Joseph’s (9–10) collected eight hits in the win, with Venezia recording two and Beggy driving in a pair from the top of the order.

The two clubs resume their weekend series on Saturday.
