In a game defined by pitching, Marty Coyne delivered the performance the University of Pennsylvania needed most.

The junior left-hander turned in a career outing Saturday afternoon, tossing eight scoreless innings to lead Penn to a 1–0 victory over East Carolina at Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

Penn (3–9) scratched across the only run of the game in the ninth inning before sophomore reliever Connor Darling closed the door, securing the Quakers’ third win of the season and their first road victory of the year. East Carolina fell to 11–8–1.

For most of the afternoon, the story belonged to the pitchers.

Coyne (1–2) was outstanding on the mound, allowing just four hits while striking out four and walking none in a career-high eight innings. The left-hander consistently kept the Pirates off balance and worked efficiently through the lineup, escaping the few scoring threats East Carolina generated.

Darling finished the job in the ninth inning, earning his second save of the season.

The Quakers finally broke through in the ninth.

With two outs, Gavin Degnan delivered a clutch double to left-center field to move the potential winning run into scoring position. Moments later, Gavin Collins lined a double down the left-field line, bringing Degnan home with what proved to be the game’s only run.

Collins finished 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in the decisive run.

Senior co-captain Jarrett Pokrovsky also recorded two hits for Penn, singling in both the first and sixth innings.

The Quakers managed just enough offense against East Carolina starter Gavin Van Kempen, who was dominant despite taking the loss. The right-hander struck out 14 batters, repeatedly overpowering Penn hitters while keeping the game scoreless into the late innings.

Both pitchers traded zeroes deep into the afternoon.

Coyne retired the Pirates in order in the first inning and continued to settle into a rhythm throughout the game. East Carolina threatened briefly in the seventh inning with two hits, but Coyne escaped the jam by inducing a fielder’s choice to end the inning.

Darling encountered some drama in the ninth after two Pirates reached base when they were hit by pitches, but the sophomore regrouped and retired the next three hitters to secure the shutout.

Penn and East Carolina will conclude the series Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
