Saint Joseph's Baseball Philadelphia News
The milestone came fittingly in dominant fashion.

Saint Joseph’s led from the opening inning Sunday afternoon, defeating Richmond 5–1 at Pitt Field to complete a three-game Atlantic 10 sweep and deliver the 400th career victory for head coach Fritz Hamburg.

The Hawks (8–9, 3–0 A-10) controlled the series from the outset, scoring in the first inning for the third consecutive game and never trailing as they finished off a weekend sweep of a Richmond team that entered the season No. 1 in the Atlantic 10 preseason coaches poll.

For Hamburg, now in his 18th season at Saint Joseph’s, the win added another milestone to a coaching career that has reshaped the program. Already the program’s all-time leader in victories — with more than double the total of the previous record holder — Hamburg became just the fourth coach in Saint Joseph’s athletics history to reach 400 career wins.

The Hawks wasted little time setting the tone.

In the top of the first inning, Alex Kelsey worked a one-out walk and moved to third on a double by Blake Primrose before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Joey Pagano to give Saint Joseph’s an early lead.

The Hawks expanded the margin in the third.

After Carson Applegate singled and a Richmond error helped place two runners on base, Primrose delivered again, ripping a two-run double that brought home Kelsey and Ben Peterson to make it 3–0.

Richmond (10–10, 0–3 A-10) answered with a sacrifice fly from Ryan Recio in the bottom half of the inning, but the Hawks quickly regained full control.

Alex Venezia provided the key insurance runs.

The senior launched a leadoff home run in the seventh inning and added another solo blast in the ninth, giving Saint Joseph’s the breathing room it needed to close out the victory.

On the mound, Luke Parise delivered another strong outing, allowing one run on five hits over six innings while improving to 2–1 on the season.

Relievers Matt Fitzgibbon and Christian Coppola combined to lock down the final three innings, surrendering just two base runners as the Hawks secured the sweep.

Primrose paced the offense with a historic performance, finishing with three doubles, tying the Saint Joseph’s single-game program record, last matched by Ryan Cesarini during the 2024 Atlantic 10 Championship.

Both Primrose and Venezia drove in two runs, while Venezia’s pair of home runs helped punctuate a weekend that firmly established the Hawks as an early contender in the conference race.

For Hamburg, the milestone victory represented the latest chapter in a tenure that has defined modern Saint Joseph’s baseball — and on Sunday afternoon in Richmond, it came in the form of a commanding series sweep.
