Swarthmore opened its spring break trip to the Spartan Southern Classic by splitting a doubleheader with No. 16 Case Western Reserve on Saturday, winning the opener 3–2 on a walk-off single by Leor Kedar before dropping the nightcap 12–7.
Kedar finished the day with three hits, a home run and three RBIs. Nathaniel Kittredge and Aidan Sullivan each collected five hits in the doubleheader.
In the opener, Kedar gave Swarthmore an early lead with a leadoff homer in the first inning. Case Western moved ahead in the sixth, but Swarthmore tied the game in the eighth on an RBI single by Kittredge.
Swarthmore won it in the ninth when Alessandro Propper-Bowring drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on Kedar’s single through the left side.
Case Western responded in the nightcap. Swarthmore tied the game with three runs in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run single from Francisco Mora, but the Spartans pulled away with four runs in the fifth and three more in the seventh.
Swarthmore rallied for three runs in the eighth but could not close the gap.
Swarthmore (6–3) will face Case Western again Sunday to conclude the series.
Elsewhere, Eastern improved to 9–3 on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Rosemont, winning 9–0 and 14–2 behind strong starting pitching and early offensive bursts.
In the opener, first-year Landon Petty delivered an impressive performance in his first collegiate start, striking out seven over four innings while allowing two hits. Petty escaped an early jam in the first inning and settled in, retiring hitters consistently before handing the ball to the bullpen.
Eastern broke a scoreless game in the second inning when Thomas Kozlusky delivered an RBI single with two outs. The lead grew to 3–0 in the third on a wild pitch that scored Luke Meehan and a Rosemont throwing error that brought home Matt McSorley.
The Eagles put the game away with six runs in the fourth inning. Meehan highlighted the rally with a two-run single, while Jason Gregory added a two-run single as Eastern extended the lead to 9–0.
Peter Mellana and Joseph Juliano combined for three scoreless innings to complete the shutout.
Eastern’s offense continued in the nightcap.
The Eagles scored twice in the first inning before breaking the game open with seven runs in the second. Trevis Harris delivered a two-run triple, while Justin DiCesare added an RBI double during the rally.
DiCesare struck again two innings later with a two-run double to extend the lead to 11–2.
Starter Brady Maerz (2–0) worked four innings, striking out five while allowing three hits and two runs. The bullpen followed with three scoreless innings to secure the sweep.
Meehan drove in three runs during the doubleheader, while DiCesare and Leyton Bameberger combined for four hits and four RBIs.
Eastern will return home Tuesday for a matchup with local rival Neumann.
In Other Action
Ursinus used a powerful offensive performance to sweep a doubleheader from Rutgers–Camden on Saturday, winning 16–4 and 8–5. The Bears collected 23 hits in the opener, led by Brett Barrett, who went 5-for-6 with two runs and two RBIs. Shane Beaver and Matthew Callahan each added four hits, while Isaac Gesford went 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs. Rutgers–Camden scored first in the opening inning, but Ursinus responded with five runs in the second to take control. The Bears continued to add on throughout the game, including a six-run fifth inning highlighted by Gesford’s three-run triple. Senior Max Shilstone earned the win in relief, tossing 4.1 scoreless innings as Ursinus pulled away.
Ursinus completed the sweep with an 8–5 victory in the nightcap. The Bears built a 4–1 lead through five innings before Rutgers–Camden rallied to make it 4–3. Ursinus answered with two runs in the eighth and added two more in the ninth to secure the win. Gesford again paced the offense, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Luke Kopec had two hits and Marco Maiuolo scored twice.
Junior Barritt Ross earned the win in relief, working the final 4.1 innings as Ursinus closed out the doubleheader sweep.
