Saint Joseph's baseball - Philly Baseball College News
For the second straight day, the game — and the moment — belonged to Richard Beggy.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the ninth inning, Beggy lined a two-run single to left field, lifting Saint Joseph’s to a 4–3 victory over Richmond on Saturday afternoon at Pitt Field and giving the Hawks a second consecutive comeback win to open Atlantic 10 play.

The hit capped another late rally for Saint Joseph’s (7–9, 2–0 A-10), which trailed entering the ninth before Beggy delivered the decisive swing.

Richmond (10–9, 0–2 A-10) had seized the lead just an inning earlier.

After the Hawks carried a 2–1 advantage deep into the game, the Spiders broke through in the bottom of the eighth. With runners on second and third and two outs, Sean Scanlon drove an 0–2 pitch into right-center field for a two-run single, giving Richmond its first lead of the afternoon at 3–2.

Saint Joseph’s quickly mounted a response.

Carson Applegate opened the ninth with a walk before Ben Peterson doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. Richmond intentionally walked Alex Kelsey to load the bases, and reliever Justin Gay struck out the next two hitters, leaving the Hawks down to their final out.

Beggy again came through.

The junior punched a single into left field, scoring two runs and putting Saint Joseph’s back in front, 4–3, in nearly identical fashion to his game-winning hit the day before.

Closing out the final three outs proved equally tense.

Richmond mounted a two-out rally in the bottom of the ninth, placing two runners aboard, but Andrew Gaines ended the threat by striking out Ryan Recio to secure the victory.

The game began with early offense before settling into a long pitching duel.

Saint Joseph’s struck first in the opening inning. Peterson reached on an error and scored on a double by Alex Kelsey, and Blake Primrose followed with an RBI single to give the Hawks a 2–0 lead before an out was recorded.

Richmond answered immediately when Evan Wilson led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run.

From there, pitching dominated for much of the afternoon.

Cole Fehrman delivered a strong start for Saint Joseph’s, striking out 10 batters while allowing one run on four hits across 4⅔ innings. Richmond starter Jackson Hinchliffe also kept the game tight, limiting the Hawks to two unearned runs on five hits.

Relief pitching kept both teams within reach until the late drama.

Sam Greer escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fifth by striking out Recio, and Richmond reliever Gay worked out of a bases-loaded threat in the seventh before the decisive ninth inning.

Beggy finished with the game-winning two RBIs, Peterson scored twice, and Tim Dickinson recorded the Hawks’ lone multi-hit performance.

The series concludes Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
