Andrew Painter - Philadelphia Baseball Review
PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies made a late change on the mound Sunday, scratching Andrew Painter from his scheduled start due to a migraine.

The decision came prior to first pitch and was made out of caution, with no indication of a more serious issue.

For Painter, the scratch interrupts what has been a measured start to his major league career.

The 23-year-old has made two starts so far for the Phillies, continuing his early progression at the highest level. In his most recent outing in San Francisco, Painter worked four innings and earned a no-decision, allowing four runs on nine hits over 90 pitches. While the results were uneven, the appearance served as another step in building his workload.

He showed a more polished version in his major league debut on March 31, allowing one run over 5.1 innings at home, flashing the command and poise that have long made him one of the organization’s most promising arms.

Sunday’s scratch fits the Phillies’ approach with Painter.

Migraines can impact vision and focus, making a start impractical, and the club has consistently prioritized long-term development over short-term availability with the 23-year-old.

Zach Pop will start the series finale against the Diamondbacks, a short-notice adjustment as the Phillies once again make clear their priority: protecting one of their most important arms.
