Cole Fehrman carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning and finished one out shy of a masterpiece Saturday, leading Saint Joseph’s to a 3–0 victory over Fordham at Houlihan Park.
Fehrman was dominant throughout, allowing just one hit over 8 1/3 innings while striking out 11. The right-hander retired 16 consecutive batters from the third through the eighth inning, keeping Fordham off balance as the Hawks waited for their offense to break through.
Saint Joseph’s (15–10, 8–0 Atlantic 10) finally did in the seventh.
After Jason Janesko was hit by a pitch to open the inning, Carson Applegate delivered a two-out single to left field, scoring Janesko for the game’s first run.
The Hawks added insurance in the eighth. Blake Primrose singled and Richard Beggy doubled to set the table before Joey Pagano lined a two-run single up the middle, extending the lead to 3–0.
That was all Fehrman needed.
Fordham (11–14, 4–4 A-10) mounted its only real threat in the ninth. A leadoff walk was followed by Fehrman striking out Tommy McAndrews, but Anthony Grabau’s single broke up the no-hit bid. With the bases loaded, Andrew Gaines entered and struck out the final two hitters to secure his fourth save.
Fehrman (1–3) walked three and allowed just one hit across 118 pitches, earning his first win in a Saint Joseph’s uniform.
The Hawks finished with nine hits, including two apiece from Beggy and Joey Gale, and improved to a perfect 8–0 in Atlantic 10 play.
In Other Philly D-I Action
La Salle battled back but couldn’t hold a late tie, falling to George Washington, 4–3, on Saturday at Barcroft Park.
The Explorers (13–14, 2–6 A-10) matched the Colonials throughout, outhitting them 7–5, but were undone by timely hits and missed chances.
George Washington struck first on a wild pitch before La Salle answered in the fourth when Justin Szestowicki scored to tie the game. The Colonials regained the lead on a two-run home run by Conlon Walker.
La Salle responded in the seventh as Chase Swain blasted a two-run homer to even the score at 3–3. But George Washington answered in the bottom half with a sacrifice bunt to retake the lead for good.
Swain led the Explorers, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Carter Groen added two hits. La Salle stranded nine runners and struck out 11 times in the loss.
