Philadelphia Phillies prospect Kevin Gowdy undergoes Tommy John surgery
Philadelphia Phillies pitching prospect Kevin Gowdy underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Tuesday, the team said. The 19-year-old is ranked as the organization's 12th best prospect according to MLB.com.

The Phillies selected Gowdy in the second round (42nd overall) of the 2016 draft and gave him a $3.5 million signing bonus. He was limited to four appearances in the Gulf Coast League last summer because of an injury and dealt with tendinitis throughout the spring this year. He remained in extended spring training but never was well enough to take the mound in a game situation.

The timetable for return following Tommy John surgery is usually about 12-16 months, so Gowdy likely won't see game action until the middle of next summer at the earliest.

Gowdy is ranked by MLB.com as the fourth best right-handed prospect in the organization behind Sixto Sanchez, Franklyn Kilome, and Adonis Medina.
