Swarthmore baseball - Philadelphia Baseball Review
Swarthmore just delivered the kind of weekend that reshapes a season.

The Garnet didn’t just win — they made a statement.

Facing No. 4 Johns Hopkins, Swarthmore swept a doubleheader, handing the Blue Jays something they hadn’t experienced since 2022. It ended a seven-game skid in the matchup and marked the first time in four years that Johns Hopkins had been swept in a doubleheader.

And they did it with resilience.

In the opener, Swarthmore trailed 6-2 before flipping the game with 10 unanswered runs — a rally built on timely hitting and a seven-run explosion that completely changed the tone of the day.

The nightcap followed a similar script.

After building a lead and watching it disappear, Swarthmore waited for its moment — and found it late. With the game tied in the eighth, Aidan Sullivan stepped in and delivered the defining swing of the weekend: a go-ahead grand slam that put the Garnet in front for good.

That wasn’t an outlier performance.

Sullivan dominated the doubleheader, finishing with five hits, six RBIs, and four runs scored across the two games. He had help throughout the lineup — Nathaniel Kittredge added five hits of his own, while multiple players contributed multi-hit efforts in a complete offensive showing.

But what stood out most wasn’t just the production.

It was the response.

Down big in Game 1, they didn’t panic.
Tied late in Game 2, they didn’t press.

They executed.

On the mound, that same steadiness showed up. Aidan Tinker settled in after early trouble to shut down Johns Hopkins the rest of the way in the opener, while Gavin Rigby closed out the second game with four scoreless innings to secure the sweep.

And now, the impact is real.

The sweep moved Swarthmore to 7-7 in Centennial Conference play, pulling them into a three-way tie with Gettysburg and Ursinus for fourth place. With only the top five teams advancing to the conference tournament, the margin is razor thin.

Johns Hopkins still leads the conference at 10-4 despite the setback, with McDaniel and Washington College close behind at 9-5. That leaves a crowded middle tier — and Swarthmore right in the center of it.

There’s no cushion.

Every inning from here matters.

The result pushed Swarthmore to 22-12 overall — and more importantly, reestablished them as a legitimate factor in the postseason race.

Because in a conference like the Centennial, statement wins don’t just boost confidence.

They change positioning.

And for Swarthmore, this wasn’t just a sweep.

It was a shift.
