Philadelphia Phillies notes - Philadelphia Baseball Review
PHILADELPHIA — The Mets arrive at Citizens Bank Park on Thursday night for a three-game set that comes at an awkward moment for the Phillies.

They are still trying to stabilize the edges of their roster. They are still searching for answers in the back of the rotation. And now they know, officially, that Adolis García’s season is over.

García will undergo right latissimus dorsi repair surgery next week, the club announced. The projected recovery timeline is six to eight months for a full return to play, putting García on track to be ready for the start of the 2027 season.

That is the long-term view. The short-term reality is messier.

And the outfield is only part of the roster churn.

The Phillies optioned Andrew Painter to Triple-A Lehigh Valley after Wednesday’s loss to the Marlins, a move that had become increasingly difficult to avoid. Painter entered the season as one of the organization’s most important young arms and, in theory, a solution for the back end of the rotation. Instead, his first extended look in the majors became a reminder that development is rarely linear, even for pitchers with elite prospect pedigrees.

Painter was hit hard again Wednesday, allowing six runs in two innings in a 12-4 loss to Miami. It continued a rough stretch that left the Phillies with little choice but to send him back to Lehigh Valley.

The Phillies had given him room to work through it. They had stayed patient. But patience in a major-league rotation has limits, especially for a team trying to keep itself positioned in the National League race.

Now Painter goes back to the minors, where the assignment is less about punishment and more about rebuilding. The Phillies need him to find sharper command, a more consistent fastball and the confidence that made him one of the most watched pitching prospects in the sport.

In the meantime, the major-league roster needed coverage.

The Phillies recalled right-hander Seth Johnson and selected the contract of right-hander Bryse Wilson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. To make room on the 26-man roster, left-hander Tanner Banks was optioned to Lehigh Valley.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski announced the moves.

Johnson, 27, joins the Phillies for the third time this season. He has pitched well in relief for Lehigh Valley and gives the Phillies another right-handed bullpen option at a time when they need fresh arms.

Wilson, 28, brings a different profile. His overall numbers at Triple-A have not been strong, but he has been better lately and gives the Phillies a pitcher with major-league experience and the ability to provide length. Wilson has appeared in parts of eight big-league seasons with the Braves, Pirates, Brewers and White Sox.

He signed with the Phillies as a minor-league free agent in December and was in camp as a non-roster invitee this spring. Depending on how the Phillies handle Painter’s rotation spot, Wilson could become part of the short-term answer.

Banks, meanwhile, heads back to Lehigh Valley after an uneven stretch in the Phillies’ bullpen. The 34-year-old left-hander has been a useful arm for the club in the past, but the immediate need was for different coverage.

All of this comes as the Phillies open their series against the Mets. Aaron Nola is scheduled to start Thursday night’s opener opposite left-hander Sean Manaea.

For the Phillies, the series arrives with layers. There is the rivalry itself. There is the need to steady the roster. There is the question of how the club handles Painter’s vacated rotation spot the next time it comes around. And there is the larger issue of how a team built to win now absorbs another hit without letting it define the summer.

That is the shape of the Phillies’ weekend.

The Mets are in town. The roster is moving. The rotation is unsettled. And the Phillies are being reminded again that a season rarely waits for clean answers.
