West Chester - Philadelphia Baseball Review
The comeback magic finally ran out.

For the better part of a month, West Chester had made a habit of staring down deficits and finding a way back. On Thursday night, the Golden Rams did it again against the two-time defending national champions. They just couldn't finish the job.

West Chester erased a four-run deficit, forced extra innings, and had the defending champions on the ropes before Tampa pushed across three runs in the 10th inning to claim a 7-4 victory in Game 1 of the NCAA Division II National Championship Series.

The loss snapped another remarkable comeback attempt for a Golden Rams club that refused to let the season's biggest stage overwhelm it.

"That is a tough loss after another hard-fought game," head coach Mike LaRosa said. "These guys competed their butts off with a great comeback after going down 4-0 and put us in a position to win it late, but it's going to be a competitive series all weekend, and we all feel like we are far from out of it."

For four innings, it looked as though Tampa might cruise.

The Spartans capitalized on opportunities in the fourth and fifth innings, building a 4-0 advantage while West Chester stranded runners in scoring position in each of the first four frames.

Then the Golden Rams responded with the kind of offensive burst that has defined their postseason run.

Carter Rust ignited the rally in the fifth inning with a towering 425-foot home run that crashed off the batter's eye in center field, one of the longest blasts seen at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in recent memory.

"I knew from our scouting reports that he liked to throw a heater when he was behind in the count," Rust said. "I got ahead and then got what I was looking for and put a good swing on it."

Moments later, Austin Stalker followed with a two-run shot that suddenly transformed a four-run deficit into a one-run game.

"We've been like that all season," Stalker said. "Once one person does something, we all hop on. Sully was in our ear all day about getting our A swing off, and I don't think I did that in my first two at-bats, but I followed Carter's lead, stuck to my approach, and got a pitch I could drive."

One inning later, West Chester completed the comeback.

Harry Middlebrooks singled and eventually scored when Landen Rozich ripped a game-tying triple into center field, knotting the score at 4-4 and sending the Golden Rams dugout into a frenzy.

From there, the game evolved into a bullpen battle.

Drew Simpson delivered three gritty innings in relief, navigating traffic while keeping Tampa off the scoreboard. Rust then produced what may ultimately be remembered as one of the defining defensive plays of West Chester's season.

With a potential go-ahead run threatening in the ninth, Rust sprinted into the right-center field gap and laid out for a fully extended diving catch that prevented extra bases and likely saved a run, preserving the tie and sending the game into extra innings.

The momentum, however, proved fleeting.

Tampa opened the 10th inning with a ball lost in the lights and a walk, creating immediate pressure. The Spartans capitalized, collecting three runs on a pair of key hits to seize a 7-4 advantage.

The opening play of the inning was particularly painful for Rozich, who later entered in relief.

"I feel terrible for Landen," LaRosa said. "He is someone who, as we've talked about all year, has played above his level all season. It's a tough time of night to field a high pop like that. I know he is kicking himself a little bit over that play, but tonight, I have confidence this group will pick him up tomorrow like this team has done for each other all season."

West Chester threatened one final time in the bottom half of the inning, but Tampa closer Luke Fikar induced three consecutive ground balls, ending the rally and giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three championship series.

Lost in the result was another strong effort from Julian Costa, who battled through six innings, allowing four runs — only two earned — while striking out six.

Now, the Golden Rams face a simple challenge.

Win Friday, and the series resets.

"This team is never out of it by any stretch," LaRosa said. "Coming out, competing tomorrow, and getting a win resets everything and gets us right back to where we want to be heading into Saturday. My hope is that with this game under our belt, we can settle in and play our game from the start tomorrow."

West Chester has spent the entire postseason proving it can recover from adversity.

To keep its season alive, it will need one more comeback.
