According to several sources, Michael Martinez has agreed to a minor league deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The deal includes an invite to Spring Training.

The 31-year-old spent the past three seasons with the Phillies and hit .187 while with the club over 162 games and 396 plate appearances.

The Phillies acquired Martinez from the Washington Nationals in the 2010 Rule 5 Draft.

Martinez's versatility made him a favorite to come off the bench under former manager Charlie Manuel, but his lack of offensive prowess hindered his overall value with the Phillies at the major league level.

The Nationals signed Martinez as an amateur free agent in 2005.

The Dominican native hit .300 last season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley and has a career .267 batting average over seven minor league seasons.
