Game Date: May 2, 1925
Hilldale 6, Cubans 1 | Game 2 of 58 | Hilldale Park
Best Press Coverage: Afro-American, (1925, May 9)
Starting Pitchers: Scrip Lee vs. Martin Dihigo
After getting away to a wobbly start, Holsey “Scrip” Lee, the Hilldale submarine artist, turned in the second league game for the Eastern League champs by baffling Alex Pompez’s Cuban Stars in the Saturday afternoon matinee at Hilldale Park, score 6 to 1.
The boys from the Island were playing their first engagement of the season on the soil of the “States,” and apparently had not rid themselves of the seal-logs contracted en route,
At that the invaders put up a nifty article of ball, especially on the defense. Their inability to hit the underhand slants served up by Lee really clinched the argument, while the local clubbers gathered eight hits and six tallies from the offerings of elongated Martin Dihigo.
The lone Cuban tally was forced in by Lee in the first inning. Mesa walked, Fabre singled, Oms sacficed and Chacon was handed a pass, filling the bases. Massip, a newcomer in the ranks of the invaders, proved to be a good waiter and Messa was forced home.
Hilldale practically clinched the game in its half of the first inning when two runs were put over on singles by Briggs and Carr. Mackey’s double and Judy Johnson’s sacrifice fly.
Note: The box score is listed below, but take note of how it appears. Unlike today's box scores, newspapers prior to the 1940s normally would include only runs scored, hits, outs recorded as a fielder, assists, and errors. This makes stat tracking extremely difficult, but this is how it was done in 1925.
