Keibert Ruiz homered for the third time in four games, while Alex Call and James Wood also went deep, propelling the Washington Nationals to a 6-4 victory over the NL-leading Phillies on Sunday. The win snapped Washington’s four-game skid and prevented a sweep in Philadelphia.
Jacob Young's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning broke a 4-4 tie, ending both the Phillies’ four-game winning streak and an eight-game losing streak for Washington in Philadelphia dating back to August 2023. The Nationals’ ability to score late off Philadelphia’s All-Star relievers was the difference. With the bases loaded, Young drove a high fastball from Matt Strahm (4-2) deep enough to score Andres Chaparro and give Washington the lead.
James Wood provided an insurance run in the ninth, crushing a 3-1 fastball from Jeff Hoffman 417 feet to right-center for his fifth homer of the season. Meanwhile, C.J. Abrams swiped three bases for the Nationals, marking the third time he’s accomplished the feat this season. Abrams tied the franchise record for the most games with three or more stolen bases, a mark originally set by Trea Turner in 2017. Abrams was attempting a fourth steal but was picked off second by Taijuan Walker in the third inning.
For Philadelphia, Bryson Stott and Brandon Marsh hit back-to-back homers, with Turner also going deep. Turner, benched earlier in the week after struggling through a 10-for-70 stretch over 16 games, finished the four-game series against the Nationals with 10 hits. His solo shot into the shrubbery in center field in the third inning was part of a two-hit day against Washington starter Jake Irvin.
Alec Bohm extended his on-base streak to 35 games with a single in the first, the longest by a Phillies player since Chase Utley’s 36-game streak in 2006.
Next, the Phillies head to Atlanta for a crucial NL East showdown. Zack Wheeler (12-5, 2.72 ERA) is set to take the mound for Philadelphia, while the Braves have yet to announce their starter.
