Trea Turner finished a triple shy of the cycle, Kyle Schwarber blasted his 33rd homer of the season, and Bryce Harper collected three hits as the Phillies overwhelmed the Miami Marlins, 16-2, on Friday night.
Johan Rojas added a career-best three doubles, while Kody Clemens also chipped in with three hits for the NL East-leading Phillies, who improved to 85-56 and pushed their lead over second-place Atlanta to eight games. Philadelphia set season highs with 16 runs and 22 hits.
Zack Wheeler (14-6) was in command, allowing just one run on two hits over six innings while striking out seven. The right-hander retired the first 10 batters he faced before Connor Norby singled in the fourth. For Rojas, the night marked his first multi-extra-base-hit performance in the majors.
The Phillies wasted no time, jumping on Miami’s emergency starter Austin Kitchen (0-1) for seven runs in the first two innings. Harper, Bryson Stott, and J.T. Realmuto contributed RBI singles in a three-run first, while Turner capped a four-run second with a two-run homer.
Realmuto, who drove in two runs with a pair of singles, exited in the fourth inning due to a left knee contusion after fouling a pitch off his knee in the second. He finished the at-bat with a single but was visibly limping as he made his way to first base. Garrett Stubbs pinch-hit for Realmuto and was already slated to start on Saturday, according to manager Rob Thomson.
Philadelphia continued to pile on, scoring three more runs in the fifth and four in the sixth. Rojas notched his second double of the night to drive in two in the fifth, and Schwarber launched a 434-foot blast to right-center in the sixth, making it 14-1.
Before the game, the Phillies placed third baseman Alec Bohm on the 10-day injured list with a left hand strain. Bohm sustained the injury while swinging in a game against Atlanta on August 29. Infielder Buddy Kennedy was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take his place.
Aaron Nola (12-6, 3.29) is set to take the mound on Saturday, facing off against Marlins right-hander Darren McCaughan (0-0, 8.24).
