The Phillies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning, sparked by Stubbs, who opened with a triple into the right-field corner. Schwarber promptly followed with a double to right-center, bringing Stubbs home. Alec Bohm kept the rally alive with a two-out RBI single, scoring Schwarber.
Schwarber continued to be a force, driving in runs with a bases-loaded grounder in the fourth and a single that capped a three-run sixth inning. By the eighth, the Phillies had blown the game open, plating five more runs. Bohm's two-run single and Nick Castellanos' 17th homer of the season, a two-run shot, highlighted the frame.
Stubbs, needing a home run for the cycle, settled for a single in the eighth and was hit by a pitch in the ninth. Kolby Allard (2-0), in a spot start to give the rotation an extra day's rest, went five innings, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out five.
The Phillies, who went 7-for-14 with runners in scoring position, matched a season high with 18 hits in Saturday's 11-2 win and followed that with 16 hits on Sunday. Over the weekend, they outscored the Royals 26-12, taking two of three in the series.
Stubbs, starting in the No. 9 spot and entering the game with a .193 average, used the entire field to his advantage. His RBI triple in the third off Royals starter Seth Lugo set the tone, and he later added a double to left that helped set up a three-run inning.
The bottom of the Phillies’ order shined, with the Nos. 7-9 hitters combining to go 8-for-12. Allard, stepping in for Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola, who have two of the top five highest innings-pitched totals in the National League, delivered when the Phillies needed it most.
Philadelphia now returns to Citizens Bank Park to open a series against the Houston Astros on Monday.
