Joe Lifsted, Rake, Philadelphia Baseball Review
Most players in the Philly Select Collegiate Baseball League already know where they are headed once the summer ends. Some are preparing to return to established college programs. Others are sharpening their game before stepping into new opportunities that have already been secured.

Joe Lifsted is playing for something less certain.

Lifsted, a 6-foot-2 outfielder with Rake Baseball Collegiate, does not yet know where he will play college baseball next spring. That uncertainty has followed him all summer, but it has not consumed him.

The Southampton, Pa., native began his college career in the fall of 2025 at West Chester University before transferring to Bucks County Community College, where he played his freshman season this past spring. Now, after one productive year at Bucks, he is searching again — not just for another roster spot, but for the right fit.

Rather than letting that pressure weigh on him, Lifsted has leaned into the simplest answer available to any player caught between what has happened and what comes next.

He has kept playing.

"I don't really think about it too much," Lifsted said. "I'm just going out there and playing every day. I know that if I play, they'll find me, so I know I'll find the right home."

That mindset has become the foundation of his summer.

"I’m playing against pretty good competition, and I feel like it's getting me ready for the next spot I'm trying to land in,” Lifsted said. "My goals this summer are just improving on the little things, like baserunning, getting my strength up, my approach at the plate."

Rake head coach Stuart Drossner has seen that focus up close. For him, Lifsted’s value is not just in the numbers, but in the way he has handled an unsettled moment in his career.

“He’s been great,” Drossner said. “He’s just focused on getting better day by day. He gives it all he has; he just needs a place to play.”

Lifsted already has shown there is plenty for another program to like.

In 36 games at Bucks County Community College this past spring, the left-handed-hitting outfielder produced a .389/.443/.619 slash line with 20 extra-base hits. He also drew more walks than strikeouts, finishing with 11 walks and just eight strikeouts — a difficult balance for any hitter, at any level of college baseball.

That production did not happen by accident. Lifsted said his biggest adjustment came from studying opposing pitchers and learning how college arms tried to attack him.

"They're so much smarter," Lifsted said of college pitchers. "They're pitching backwards, throwing off-speed pitches even when they're behind in the count because they trust it."

By the end of the season, Lifsted felt he had begun recognizing those patterns instead of merely reacting to them. That growth is part of what he hopes his next coaching staff sees: a hitter with bat-to-ball skills, strike-zone awareness and a willingness to make adjustments.

"I like to be aggressive, but also have a smart approach," Lifsted said. "Not swinging at pitches I don't have to swing at, not getting myself out."

There is more to his game than the offensive profile. Lifsted is capable of playing all three outfield spots, takes pride in taking extra bases, and plays with the kind of energy he believes can lift the players around him.

"I strive to be the best teammate I can be and always encourage my teammates," Lifsted said.

Drossner has seen that part of him, too.

“He is a great teammate,” Drossner said. “It’s been a pleasure to have him on our team.”

Thanks to his production at Bucks and his continued work this summer in the PSCBL, potential opportunities have started to emerge. Still, even as an uncommitted player in a league filled with college-bound talent, Lifsted is not rushing the process.

His focus remains where it has been since the beginning of the summer: play hard, keep improving and trust that the right opportunity will come.

So far, he has not allowed the uncertainty of tomorrow to distract him from the work in front of him today. In many ways, that has become the story of his summer.

“He’ll find a home,” Drossner said. “And when he does, he’ll just be focused on being ready to compete.”
