The Delco Fords did not wait around for the game to settle in.
They came out swinging at Dick Allen Field, put four runs on the board in the first inning, and used that early burst to carry them through a 9-6 win over the Philadelphia Stars.
The fast start mattered, but so did the way the Fords responded later. The Stars battled back and tied the game, 5-5, in the third inning, forcing Delco to reset after seeing its early cushion disappear. The Fords answered by adding four more runs over the rest of the game, then held off a late push after the Stars loaded the bases in the seventh.
Jonathan Bausman, who had an RBI and a walk in the win, said the difference was the way the Fords communicated throughout the game, especially after difficult at-bats.
“We did a great job of coming back in after kids struck out,” Bausman said. “We really told our guys, ‘What’s it looking like out of the hand?’ I think we had really good communication this game.”
That communication helped the Fords keep pressure on the Stars, even after Philadelphia pulled even. It also helped pitcher Nick Bausman work through the late trouble and protect the lead.
“I think our pitcher, Nick, did a really good job of staying under control and staying calm,” Jonathan Bausman said. “He knows that we have good players in the field and he can trust us. I think our team just has a lot of trust. We’ve been playing for a long time, so I think that’s really good chemistry.”
The win continued a strong stretch for the Fords, who have now won four straight after dropping their first two games.
Manager Brian Miller said the team has settled in by keeping the game simple.
“We’ve won a couple games in a row,” Miller said. “We’re just trying to get better each game and just having some fun.”
Miller said the early four-run first inning gave the Fords energy, but he also emphasized the importance of keeping the players relaxed once the game tightened.
“I’m just trying to keep them relaxed, realize it’s just a game, we’re just out here having fun,” Miller said. “Don’t make it too big. Don’t make it bigger than it is. It’s just a small game. We’re just trying to get better each day.”
Jamie Lee helped set the tone offensively, finishing with two runs, a hit and a walk. He said the Fords are starting to look more like the team they expected to be after a slow start.
“We’re trying to keep that momentum, staying hot with the bats,” Lee said. “We struggled early on in the season, but I think we’re really improving.”
Lee said the goal from here is to keep building toward the part of the season that matters most.
“Just keep playing well,” Lee said, “and then do damage in the playoffs.”
For Miller, there is also a bigger-picture value in the summer season. The Fords’ roster is made up of players from Haverford High School, giving them a chance to build chemistry before returning to their school program.
“I just think them playing together and just winning and losing together will help them in the long run,” Miller said. “We’re all better when we know what consistency we can bring to another team. Just getting them out and playing, that’s the best thing.”
The Fords showed that chemistry against the Stars. They built an early lead, lost it, answered back and finished the game under pressure.
That is the kind of win that can carry forward.
