From Ivy League brilliance to Division III slugfests, Philadelphia-area college baseball delivered another dominant week. Here's a look at this week's top performers who turned heads and earned recognition at every level of NCAA baseball.
Division I Pitcher of the Week: Thomas Shurtleff, Penn
Penn’s bullpen weapon, Thomas Shurtleff, was named Ivy League Pitcher of the Week after a dazzling stretch that saw him appear in three of the Quakers’ four games—each one better than the last. The right-hander logged 5.2 shutout innings, allowing just two hits, striking out 11, and walking none while holding opponents to a minuscule .118 batting average.
Shurtleff was a menace against Princeton, striking out eight over 4.2 dominant innings, picking up both a win and a save in the series. He slammed the door in the series finale, fanning five of the nine batters he faced, including a 1-2-3 12th inning to seal the sweep.
Division I Offensive Player of the Week: Michael Whooley, Villanova
Michael Whooley is heating up at the right time for Villanova. The slugger posted a .462 batting average with a .562 on-base percentage over four games, belting two home runs and driving in four runs as the Wildcats took two of three from Georgetown.
Now riding a six-game hitting streak and a 10-game on-base streak, Whooley leads Villanova with 36 hits and has already surpassed his career-high with six homers this season.
Division II Pitcher of the Week: Kevin Baez, Jefferson
For the second time this season, Kevin Baez takes home weekly honors—this time for a dominant effort against nationally ranked Goldey-Beacom. Baez spun a complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits over seven innings with seven strikeouts and no runs. His outing came with a 0.00 ERA and 0.86 WHIP, continuing his evolution into a true ace for Jefferson.
Division II Offensive Player of the Week: Thomas Matuszewski, Jefferson
Jefferson’s Thomas Matuszewski lit up opposing pitching this week, going 13-for-25 (.520) at the plate with 12 RBI, seven runs, a double, and a three-run homer. He delivered multi-hit performances in four of six games, including a 3-for-6, 2-RBI effort to open the series against Georgian Court and a 3-for-4, 4-RBI showing later in the set.
Matuszewski was just as productive against Goldey-Beacom, finishing the weekend with five hits and six RBI in three games, proving to be the engine of Jefferson’s high-powered offense.
Division III Offensive Player of the Week: Jake Fallers, Penn State Abington
Jake Fallers was a force in a perfect 4-0 week for Penn State Abington, going 5-for-10 (.500) with four extra-base hits, including two home runs and two doubles. He scored 10 runs, drove in four, and drew seven walks, reaching base in every game.
Fallers homered in back-to-back games, raising his season total to a team-best seven homers and proving to be a constant threat in the middle of the lineup.
Division III Pitcher of the Week: Noah Potholm, Swarthmore
Noah Potholm continued his steady campaign with a stellar outing against Franklin & Marshall. The junior improved to 5-1 on the year with seven strong innings, allowing just one run on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks in Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader.
