Holy Family opened conference play with a doubleheader split on Friday, bouncing back from a Game 1 loss with a 2-1 win in the nightcap, thanks to a pair of first-inning runs and a dominant complete game from Jorden Sesar.
The Tigers wasted no time in the second game, jumping ahead early when Marc Garcia singled with one out and Brian Comer worked a walk. Jon Martinez followed with a single to drive in the first run, and an error moments later brought home what proved to be the game-winner.
From there, it was the Sesar Show. The right-hander allowed just one earned run on three hits, striking out 10—including fanning the side in the seventh to slam the door on his first win as a Tiger.
Game 1 belonged to the Griffins, as Michael Benedetto II doubled and homered to lead the offense. Starter Jake Schweiker was outstanding, going 7 1/3 innings and allowing just one unearned run on seven hits in a 5-3 victory.
In the nightcap, Jason Kelly took the loss despite going the distance, surrendering just two runs on four hits. But with Sesar in command, that was more than enough for Holy Family to salvage the split.
Queens struck first in the opener, plating two early runs, but that lead didn’t last long. West Chester’s offense caught fire in the middle innings and never cooled off, outscoring its opponent 26-2 over the final 12 innings of the day. The only other run for Queens came on a solo homer in the third inning of Game 1, but that was all the visitors could muster as the Golden Rams dominated both at the plate and on the mound.
West Chester will look to close out the series sweep when the teams meet again for another doubleheader on Saturday.
