Salvador Perez and Hunter Renfroe each delivered two-run homers during a decisive five-run third inning on Friday night, powering the Kansas City Royals to a 7-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in the opener of a pivotal interleague series.
Michael Wacha (11-6) extended his winning streak to seven decisions, allowing just two runs on six hits over six innings while striking out five. Wacha has been in top form, remaining unbeaten since June 22 and not surrendering more than three earned runs in any start since early June.
The night was a different story for Taijuan Walker (3-5), whose struggles deepened. The Phillies’ right-hander was tagged for six runs on eight hits across three innings, continuing a troubling trend. Over his last eight starts, Walker has allowed 30 runs on 43 hits and 18 walks across 38 innings. In the third inning, with the game tied at 1-1, the Royals strung together six hits in seven at-bats, with only Bobby Witt Jr.’s scorching 114.6 mph groundout breaking the streak. Perez and Renfroe's two-run blasts capped the rally, setting the Royals on course for the win.
Philadelphia’s offense couldn’t generate enough to mount a comeback, despite RBIs from Nick Castellanos, Bryson Stott, and Brandon Marsh.
With the loss, and the Braves securing a win over the Nationals, the Phillies’ lead in the National League East dwindled to five games.
Walker’s ERA soared to 6.26, including a concerning 9.76 in three starts since his return from the IL. The Phillies have now lost each of his last eight starts, raising questions about his place in the rotation.
Asked whether Walker will make his next scheduled start, manager Rob Thomson was noncommittal, saying, “We haven’t talked about it yet.”
As the Phillies continue to limp through the stretch with a 13-22 record since July 11, they’ll turn to Ranger Suárez on Saturday, hoping the return of the All-Star left-hander can spark a turnaround.
