West Chester University's baseball team, seeded No. 2 in the East, is set to take on Mercyhurst, seeded No. 3 in the West, in the upcoming Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) postseason tournament. The game is scheduled for Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. and will follow a single-elimination format for the first round.
This matchup marks the third consecutive year that West Chester and Mercyhurst will meet in the first-round elimination game. In past encounters, Mercyhurst clinched a victory in 2022, while West Chester emerged triumphant last year.
The tournament's format will switch to double-elimination after the initial single-elimination round.
Having secured their 20th appearance in the conference tournament and their 12th consecutive trip, West Chester aims to add to their five previous PSAC titles. Their last championship victory dates back to 2016, and with a strong regular season behind them, boasting a record of 39 wins and 7 losses, they are in contention for another title.
The team's recent form has been impressive, culminating in a four-game sweep over Millersville to close out the regular season.
The 39 wins ties a regular season program record set in 2009.
Earlier this year, West Chester faced Mercyhurst in Cary, N.C., emerging victorious with a 5-4 scoreline. The Golden Rams showcased their offensive prowess throughout the season, leading the PSAC in hits, runs, and RBI in the PSAC.
Anthony Boccio leads the offense with a .415 batting average and a 1.197 OPS, while Evan Profy is hitting .367 with 20 stolen bases. Joe Kaleck leads the club with seven dingers, while Spencer Avery leads the team with 47 RBIs.
The winner of the West Chester vs. Mercyhurst clash will advance to play the winner between Seton Hill and Shippensburg on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
