Freshman hurler Will McCausland made his home debut on Friday for Saint Joseph's and was outstanding, surrendering two runs over six frames as the Hawks knocked off UMass Lowell at Smithson Field, 4-3.
McCausland, a Harleyesville native (Souderton Area), scattered seven hits while collecting 11 strikeouts. The double-digit strikeout effort marks the first for the Hawks since Jordan DiValerio whiffed 10 in six innings at North Carolina Central on February 28, 2020.
The River Hawks carried a two-run lead into the sixth inning before the Hawks fought back. Nate Thomas launched a three-run bomb in the frame to give Saint Joseph's a 3-2 lead while Justin Igoe chipped in later in the inning with an RBI single to extend the Hawks' advantage to 4-2.
Peter Gallo collected the save, tossing three innings while surrendering one run. He whiffed six.
The win improved the Hawks to 2-6 on the year.
The two clubs will resume their weekend set on Saturday at Smithson Field.
