The Phillies have won seven straight games. The betting market has noticed.
Philadelphia enters Saturday night’s rematch with St. Louis as a -148 favorite at FanDuel Sportsbook, with the Cardinals at +138. The Phillies are -1.5 at +136 on the run line, while the total sits at nine runs — Over +100 and Under -122 as of 2:12 p.m. ET.
The question is whether a seven-game winning streak is enough to justify laying nearly -150 with Andrew Painter on the mound.
Painter’s season numbers remain difficult to ignore: 2-8 with a 6.43 ERA and 1.55 WHIP. But those numbers obscure some improvement. Over his last four starts, Painter has allowed 10 earned runs across 20 1/3 innings, and his best outing during that stretch came against these Cardinals on Aug. 10, when he allowed two runs and two hits over 5 1/3 innings. His last start was rougher, with Minnesota scoring five runs in five innings.
St. Louis originally expected to start Andre Pallante before an injury forced the Cardinals to turn to rookie left-hander Quinn Mathews. Mathews owns a 3.00 ERA through two major-league starts and allowed one run on two hits over four innings Monday against Cincinnati. Before reaching the majors, he posted a 3.13 ERA over 92 Triple-A innings, including a 1.59 mark across his final 10 starts before his initial promotion.
That pitching change has mattered to the market.
Philadelphia opened around -130 before being pushed toward -145 and beyond at several sportsbooks. VSiN reported significant action on the Phillies after the change, including a notable disparity between run-line tickets and money wagered on Philadelphia.
There is a baseball case for that movement, too.
The Phillies are hitting .259 since the All-Star break, compared with .240 for St. Louis. They have won nine of 11 and demonstrated again Friday that the lineup no longer needs one home run to manufacture an offense. Philadelphia collected 11 hits and went 5-for-9 with runners in scoring position in its 7-6 walk-off victory.
Still, laying -148 with Painter provides little margin for error.
The more interesting angle may be the Over 9 at +100.
Painter remains capable of allowing traffic and hard contact, while Mathews has yet to work beyond a short major-league sample. St. Louis also needed five pitchers after Hunter Dobbins departed Friday with forearm stiffness, adding further strain to a staff already forced to reshuffle its rotation.
And Jordan Walker remains dangerous. He went 3-for-5 with a homer Friday and has now homered in three consecutive games. Alec Burleson has also been swinging well, while Philadelphia has enough depth to pressure Mathews and reach a Cardinals bullpen that may again be asked to cover several innings.
The play: Over 9 (+100, FanDuel).
Nine provides a useful push point. With two uncertain starting-pitching situations, two productive offenses and bullpen questions on both sides, there are more paths to a 6-4 game than the market may be accounting for.
Player prop to watch: Jordan Walker 2+ total bases.
Walker’s current form and another matchup with Painter make him the Cardinals hitter worth targeting. The price matters, though. Near even money, there is interest. If the market gets heavily juiced, the value disappears.
The Phillies may very well win their eighth straight.
From a betting perspective, however, the better wager is on both teams helping light the scoreboard.
