West Chester just keeps rolling at home. The No. 14/19 Golden Rams (20-5, 4-2) took both games of Friday’s doubleheader against Kutztown (8-15, 2-4), cruising to an 11-0 win in Game 1 before grinding out a 3-2 comeback victory in Game 2.
The nightcap wasn’t decided until the defense stepped up in a big way. In the fifth, Anthony Boccio, Austin Stalker, and Caleb Strawhecker combined to cut down the tying run at the plate. An inning later, Jake Welsch sealed the win with a diving catch in center.
West Chester jumped ahead early in Game 1 with a sacrifice fly from Boccio before a defensive miscue allowed another run to cross in the second. After two scoreless frames, the Golden Rams broke things open with a nine-run fifth, highlighted by Stalker’s two-run homer and RBI hits from Boccio, Spencer, Bolhouse, and Szestowicki. Costa dominated on the mound, striking out eight over six shutout innings before Costello finished off the win.
Kutztown responded in Game 2 with a pair of early runs, but West Chester answered quickly. Bolhouse doubled home Szestowicki, then Spencer tied it with an RBI single. Welsch gave the Rams their first lead with a fourth-inning RBI single before the defense came through in the fifth—Boccio’s throw to Stalker and a perfect relay to Strawhecker cut down the tying run at the plate. Noga battled through five innings for the win, and Ferguson locked it down with a six-out save.
West Chester looks for the sweep Saturday as the series shifts to Kutztown. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
