In a thrilling Sunday afternoon showdown at the USA National Baseball Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina, 18th-ranked West Chester secured a hard-fought 5-4 victory over Mercyhurst, with Sean Szestowicki dashing home on a clutch single by Evan Profy in the bottom of the sixth inning. 
 
The win marked West Chester's (7-0) third nail-biting triumph by just one run over the weekend. 
 
Drew Simpson showcased his pitching prowess, earning his second win of the season in relief. He delivered three masterful scoreless innings, allowing only two hits while striking out five batters. 
 
Contributing to the offensive effort, Avery Spencer and Darius Troche each left their mark with two RBIs apiece.
 
The Golden Rams will now return to the region for their home opener on Tuesday, barring a rain out, against Goldey-Beacom. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Serpico Stadium.  
 
Elsewhere, Jefferson (3-3) dropped a pair of contests to No. 14 Southern New Hampshire, falling 7-6 in Game 1 before dropping the nightcap, 11-8. 
 
The Rams battled in the opener, coming up short in the final frame after already pushing two runs across via a pinch-hit two-run homer by Alexander Angulo. 
 
Josh Lopez also homered in the contest for the Rams while finishing with two hits. 
 
Lopez, and Chris McLean, led the Rams at the plate in the nightcap, each homering while collecting two hits. Marquise Wood finished with three RBIs.
 
Jefferson and Southern New Hampshire will play another doubleheader on Monday.
