Each week throughout the college baseball season, the Philadelphia Baseball Review honors outstanding performances with the Offensive Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week awards.
Pitcher of the Week recognition goes to Eastern right-hander John Beck, who kicked off his senior season with a solid performance on the mound. The Eagles edged out a 5-2 victory over Clarks Summit in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday, breaking a 2-2 tie with three runs in the sixth inning.
Beck (1-0), who earned All-MAC Commonwealth Second Team honors last spring, showcased his pitching skills in the season opener. Hailing from Butler, N.J., Beck recorded six strikeouts on 76 pitches, accompanied by six flyouts and eight groundouts.
Despite less-than-ideal weather conditions, Beck displayed control, conceding only two unearned runs.
Our Offensive Player of the Week is graduate student outfielder Dustin Sutton, who took on the leadoff role in two weekend games for Cabrini. Hailing from Delaware, Sutton's contribution was key in the Cavs' consecutive victories.
Over the weekend, he posted a .500 batting average, going 3-for-6 at the plate, with five walks and seven runs scored. Sutton also showcased his speed with two stolen bases.
Starting the season with a flawless 3-0 record, the Cavs have been dominant, outscoring opponents by a significant margin of 35-5.
