Nola and Phillies fall to Mets
Sunday's contest between the Mets and Phillies looked, on paper at least, to be a low-scoring affair with two of baseball's best pitchers facing off against each other. Unfortunately, the anticipation didn't translate to real-life as the Mets trounced Aaron Nola and the Phillies at Citi Field, 14-1.

Nola lasted just 5 1/3 innings, surrendering six runs (three earned) on eight hits. Several defensive miscues contributed to Nola's rough afternoon.

“I think we can play better,” manager Joe Girardi said. “I think that when we make mistakes, it seems to be all in the same game, right? The games that we pitch well are usually pretty clean. When I look at defense, I look at -- did we make the plays that we should make? Sometimes there could be a physical thing that keeps a guy from making a play. He’s not as fast as maybe another guy or something like that. At times our defense has been really good, but there have been those games, like today, that it’s really let us down.”

Jacob deGrom was spectacular for the Mets, picking up 12 strikeouts while scattering three hits.

Andrew Knapp accounted for the Phils lone run with a solo homer in the second.

The Phillies bullpen combined to surrender eight runs over the final 2 2/3 innings of the contest. The bullpen ERA of 6.57, though notable better than earlier in the season, is still the second-worst mark in baseball.

The Phillies turn to Zack Wheeler on Monday in the series finale. This will be his first start back at Citi Field since leaving the Mets this past offseason. He's currently 4-0 with a 2.20 ERA. The Mets counter with lefty David Peterson.

Following the series finale in New York, the Phillies will return to Philadelphia for a doubleheader with the Red Sox on Tuesday. From there, the club heads to Miami for seven-game series that includes a pair of doubleheaders.
