Within moments, Dave Dombrowski addressed two of the Phillies’ most pressing trade-deadline needs.
Shortly after reports surfaced that Philadelphia was acquiring three-time batting champion Luis Arraez and right-handed reliever Caleb Kilian from the San Francisco Giants, the Phillies reportedly struck again, acquiring veteran left-hander Brooks Raley from the New York Mets.
The Phillies are sending outfielder John Spikerman and right-handed pitcher Luke Gabrysh to New York, according to multiple reports. The clubs had not immediately announced the trade.
The quick succession of moves transformed what had been a quiet deadline morning into an aggressive push from Dombrowski.
Arraez gives the Phillies one of baseball’s most accomplished contact hitters. Kilian adds another right-handed bullpen option. Raley provides the experienced left-handed reliever Philadelphia had lacked throughout much of the season.
Raley, 38, has posted a 1.96 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 40 strikeouts across 41⅓ innings this season. He has established himself as one of baseball’s most dependable left-handed relievers since rebuilding his career with Tampa Bay in 2022 and joining the Mets the following year.
His effectiveness is built more on deception and movement than overwhelming velocity.
Raley works from a low arm slot and relies heavily on a sweeping breaking ball that can move more than two feet horizontally. The pitch has been especially difficult for left-handed hitters, but Raley has remained effective enough against right-handed batters to avoid being reduced to a traditional matchup specialist.
That distinction matters for manager Don Mattingly.
The three-batter minimum has reduced the value of relievers who can only retire hitters from one side of the plate. Raley gives the Phillies someone capable of entering against a dangerous left-handed hitter and remaining in the game when the opposing lineup turns over.
He also gives Mattingly another trusted option before closer Jhoan Duran.
Philadelphia entered deadline day needing a more dependable bridge through the middle and late innings. José Alvarado has struggled with command and consistency, while the season-ending loss of Brad Keller further reduced the number of relievers Mattingly could trust in close games.
Raley does not possess Duran’s overpowering arsenal, but the Phillies did not necessarily need another closer. They needed another reliever who could handle important outs in the sixth, seventh or eighth inning without forcing Mattingly to chase favorable matchups.
The price reflects Raley’s status as an accomplished but short-term addition.
Spikerman, 23, was a third-round selection out of Oklahoma in the 2024 MLB Draft. The switch-hitting outfielder was ranked as the Phillies’ No. 28 prospect by MLB Pipeline and had produced a .421 on-base percentage with 18 stolen bases across two minor-league levels this season.
Gabrysh, a Wilmington native selected out of Saint Joseph’s in 2024, spent this season pitching for High-A Jersey Shore. His overall results were uneven, but he demonstrated swing-and-miss ability and delivered five scoreless innings against Frederick in late May.
Neither player was among Philadelphia’s most valuable prospects, making the return reasonable for a reliever who should immediately occupy an important bullpen role.
Raley can become a free agent after the season, reinforcing the urgency surrounding the move. The Phillies are not acquiring him as part of a long-term bullpen reconstruction. They are acquiring him because they believe he can help them win important games now.
That was the message Dombrowski delivered Monday morning.
First came Arraez and Kilian. Moments later came Raley.
In a matter of minutes, the Phillies added a batting champion and two relievers, addressing multiple weaknesses while making it clear their deadline work was no longer moving cautiously.
