Dombrowski, 64, was an architect in leading Boston to a 2018 World Series victory. He also won a World Series ring with the Marlins in 1997 and turned around a Detroit club that won just 43 games in 2003 into a perennial American League contender.
Dombrowski's name surfaced in October as a candidate to take over baseball decisions in Philadelphia following the demotion of general manager Matt Klentak.
The Phillies are in a difficult position. Ownership lost roughly $150 million this past year due to the pandemic, and the organization, according to sources, is exploring ways to trim costs in 2021. That's bad news for a team that, on paper at least, has expectations to compete for a postseason berth.
The Phillies interviewed former Marlins executive Michael Hill and Dodgers executive Josh Byrnes for the position over the last several weeks.
Dombrowski will have some franchise-defining decisions to make in the coming weeks. J.T. Realmuto has hit the open market and is eyeing a massive deal. The bullpen appears to be a near-total rebuild, the farm-system is considered one of the weakest in baseball, and the starting rotation has more questions right now than answers.
The likely addition of Dombrowski to the organization means the presumed departure of team president Andy MacPhail. MacPhail was going to retire following the 2021 season but said last month that he would be willing to step aside if the Phillies were to bring in someone to lead baseball operations.
The Phillies finished four games below .500 last season under new manager Joe Girardi and hasn't posted a winning season since 2011.
