The Phillies have placed shortstop J.P. Crawford on the disabled list with a strained right forearm. The injury occurred Saturday night in the fifth inning after making a relay throw.

"My arm went numb after that," Crawford told reporters afterward. "I just lost feeling. No ligament or any damage like that. So that's good news."

Crawford admitted he had been playing with soreness in the elbow area over the last few weeks. He's made five throwing errors already this season.

The Phillies called up infielder Jesmuel Valentin from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to occupy Crawford's spot on the roster. The 23-year-old was hitting .242 with one homer and six RBIs with the IronPigs.

With Crawford out of the lineup, it's likely Scott Kingery will see regular action in the infield.
