Philadelphia Phillies sign several international prospects
Sunday marks the opening of Major League Baseball's international signing period and the Philadelphia Phillies already have agreements in place with several prospects, according to multiple sources.

Luis Garcia, 16, is a shortstop out of the Dominican Republic. He's a defensive-minded player with an excellent glove and a strong arm. Offensively, he's a switch-hitter and projects as a top of the order bat and decent speed. He's a slap hitter with marginal power.

Agreements are also in place with Colombian pitcher Victor Vargas and Venezuelan hurler Carlos Betancourt.

Vargas throws four pitches and consistently sits in the low-90s with a fastball that can dance within the strike-zone. Betancourt throws an above-average curve but lacks polish and command and projects more as a reliever compared to Vargas who has the ability to

Other players reportedly inked by the Phillies include catchers Cesar Rodriguez (Venezuela) and Oscar Gonzalez (Venezuela), and pitcher Israel Puello (Dominican Republic).
