Max Beermann clubbed a grand slam to highlight a six-run second inning on Wednesday to lead Villanova to a 7-3 victory over La Salle in the Explorers home opener at Hank DeVincent Field.

The contest marked the first of the season between city rivals.

Beermann finished the afternoon with five RBI.

A pair of defensive miscues allowed the Wildcats to jump ahead to a 7-0 lead before the Explorers answered with Ryan Welling hitting a solo homer in the fifth.

Villanova starter Mike Sgaramella tossed six innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits and a walk. He struck out 10 while collecting the victory.

La Salle's Tom Fazzini surrendered all seven runs over the first two frames, but all were unearned. The bullpen, led by James Santore, combined for seven scoreless innings.

Todd Czinege finished 3-for-4 for the Wildcats in the winning effort.

Cameron Johnson and Justin Korenblatt combined for four of the Explorers seven hits on the afternoon.
